Mrs. Martha Frances Smith Cornell, 92, of Elberton, passed away Tuesday, January 31, 2017 in Elbert Memorial Hospital, surrounded by her family. Mrs. Cornell was a native of Anderson, South Carolina, the daughter of the late Jesse Leo and Ella Robinson Skelton Cornell.She was the widow of Wilbur J. Cornell after they enjoyed 66 years of marriage.She retired from Star Cleaners after 50 years.Mrs. Cornell was a member of Calvary Presbyterian Church and a self-employed seamstress.She made and altered wedding dresses for many young brides in Elbert County over the years, as well as made the school band and cheerleader uniforms for Elbert County.Mrs. Cornell loved flowers and gardening as well as hand painting china, an art that she has passed down to her great-granddaughter. A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Cornell was held Saturday, February 4th at 11:00 a.m. in Calvary Presbyterian Church with Rev. Peter Yuh and Rev. David Keister officiating.Interment followed in Elmhurst Cemetery with John Thomas Mozingo II, John Thomas Mozingo III, Donald Keith Lord, Kenan Price Lord, James Bart Smith, and Broughton Power Smith serving as pallbearers. The family received friends Friday evening from 6:00 – 8:00pm at the funeral home. Survivors include son, Wilbur Ray Cornell and his wife, Brenda, of Toccoa; daughter, Martha Angela Anderson and her husband, Doyle, Dewy Rose; grandchildren:Kellie Smith and husband, Bart, of Elberton, Christy Mozingo and husband, John, of Toccoa, Justin Fleming, Virginia, and Ashley Lord and husband, Keith, of Commerce; and 5 great-grandchildren. Arrangements for Mrs. Martha Smith Cornell were in the care of Hicks Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
